Steam inhalation with aromatic herbs is a classic Ayurvedic practice (Swedana) for clearing nasal and sinus congestion. The warm, moist air combined with volatile essential oils from eucalyptus and mint helps thin mucus, reduce sinus inflammation, and open blocked passages. In Ayurveda, sinus congestion is a Kapha imbalance — excess heavy, moist energy accumulated in the head. This remedy uses heating, penetrating herbs to liquefy and expel stagnant Kapha. Research suggests eucalyptus oil (1,8-cineole) has significant decongestant and anti-inflammatory effects on the respiratory tract.
