A structured breathing technique used by Navy SEALs and first responders for immediate stress relief. Simple to learn, powerful in effect, and can be done anywhere.

Instructions

**The Technique:** Box breathing (also called square breathing or 4-4-4-4) uses equal-length phases: 1. **INHALE** through nose for 4 counts 2. **HOLD** (lungs full) for 4 counts 3. **EXHALE** through nose for 4 counts 4. **HOLD** (lungs empty) for 4 counts This is one "box." Repeat for 4-5 minutes. **Why It Works:** The equal-length holds interrupt the stress response cycle and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. The counting gives your mind a focus point, breaking the anxiety thought loop. **Progression:** - Beginner: 3-3-3-3 counts (3 minutes) - Standard: 4-4-4-4 counts (5 minutes) - Advanced: 5-5-5-5 or 6-6-6-6 counts (5-10 minutes) **When To Use:** - Before a stressful meeting or presentation - During anxiety or panic symptoms - Before sleep - Any time you need to reset your nervous system **Tip:** Visualize tracing a square as you breathe — up for inhale, across for hold, down for exhale, across for hold.
