Yoga Nidra, which translates to "yogic sleep," is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental, and emotional relaxation while maintaining a state of awareness. Unlike conventional meditation where you sit upright, Yoga Nidra is practiced lying down in Savasana (corpse pose). The practice was systematized by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in the 1960s, drawing from ancient tantric practices. It follows a specific protocol: body rotation awareness (Nyasa), breath awareness, visualization, and the planting of a Sankalpa (intention or resolve). Research shows Yoga Nidra activates the parasympathetic nervous system and shifts brain waves from beta (active) to alpha (relaxed) and eventually theta (deep meditation) and delta (deep sleep) — all while maintaining a thread of consciousness. For Vata types, Yoga Nidra is especially beneficial as it grounds scattered energy and promotes deep rest. Pitta types benefit from the cooling, surrender-based nature of the practice. Kapha types may find it initially sleepy-inducing but benefit from the mental clarity that follows. Start with 20-minute sessions and gradually extend to 45 minutes. Even a single session can leave you feeling as rested as several hours of sleep.
